Glenlivet 18yo
In the early 1800s, in remote valleys and barns, at least 200 illicit stills were hard at work in the region known as Glenlivet.
The British government struggled to rid the Highlands of Scotland of illicit distillers yet, with splendid irony, King George IV insisted on calling for The Glenlivet whisky. The King's preference brought high approval of The Glenlivet whisky, already established as the most treasured of all Highland whiskies.
In the early 19th Century the clampdown on illegal operations began. The Duke of Gordon, a wealthy landowner recognised that the farmers relied on the income from illegal whisky production to pay the rent. His response was to reduce duties and introduce legal licences for the production of whisky.
The first licence was granted to George Smith for The Glenlivet - the only whisky entitled to call itself The Glenlivet.
Only two working distilleries remain in this remote Livet Valley where George Smith began his craft nearly 200 years ago and where the unique elements yield the original richly-balanced malt whisky that is The Glenlivet.
The pioneering spirit runs through the history of The Glenlivet and is as true today as it was then, epitomised by the recent introductions of the unique French Oak Finish, the award winning The Glenlivet 18 year old and The Glenlivet Cellar Collection.
Today over 4 million bottles a year of The Glenlivet are produced in all its different expressions and enjoyed all over the world.
The Glenlivet is the third best selling malt whisky in the world by volume and number one malt whisky in the dynamic US market. The Glenlivet is a perfectly balanced Speyside malt that exhibits the delicacy and softness that typifies the region's whiskies.
