Wild Turkey 101

In 1789, Reverend Elijah Craig in Kentucky created a new whiskey formula using corn, rye and barley malt. By 1840 this new whiskey produced in Bourbon County was called "bourbon". The United States Government officially established standards for producing this category of whiskey twenty-four years later . The heritage of Wild Turkey Kentucky Straight Bourbon originated with the Ripy family, who founded their distillery in 1869 on what is now known as Wild Turkey Hill in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky. The heritage developed as Austin Nichols shed its wholesale grocery business in 1939 to focus on fine wine and spirits.

A year later, a distillery executive named Thomas McCarthy brought a private supply of bourbon along to enjoy with some friends on an annual Wild Turkey hunt. His friends liked it so much that the next year they asked him to bring along some of that same 'Wild Turkey' bourbon. He trusted his friends' good taste by turning their nickname into a legendary brand.
